Before you begin If you are working collaboratively and want all team members' decisions included in the export, make sure Blind Mode is off before exporting. With Blind Mode on, only your own decisions will be included.
You can export references and decisions from the Screening and Full text screening stages. The process is the same in both — each export is limited to the data from that stage.
Note You can also export from the Review data tab. The only common use case for this is recovering accidentally deleted duplicates — see How to Recover a Deleted Duplicate in Rayyan.
How to export
- Go to the Screening or Full text screening stage. If you are working collaboratively and want all team members' decisions included, make sure Blind Mode is off before proceeding.
- To export a filtered subset, apply your filters first — for example, filter by Included to export only included references.
- Open the Review Settings panel using the ··· icon in the top bar and click Export. The Export Articles dialog opens.
- Choose All References or Filtered — the number in brackets shows exactly how many references will be exported.
- Select your File Format (see table below).
- Choose which Rayyan data to include: Include Abstracts, Include Decisions, Include Exclusion Reasons, Include Labels, Include User Notes.
- Select your preferred Authors Format — First Name, Last Name or Last Name, First Name.
- Click Export.
Where to find your export
Once generated, your export is available in three places:
- Email — a download link is sent to your registered email address.
- Review Chat — the Rayyan Systems Bot posts "Export completed. Click to download" in the review's chat thread.
- My Library — Rayyan automatically saves the file to My Library under Exports → [Review ID subfolder]. The "Click to download" link in Review Chat takes you directly there. Click Download in My Library to save the file to your device.
Best practice Access your export files from My Library for long-term storage.
Export formats
| Format | File type | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| RefMan | .ris | Reference managers such as Mendeley, Zotero, and EndNote — download the file then import it into your tool of choice. Most universally compatible format. |
| BibTeX | .bib | LaTeX-based workflows — download the file then import into JabRef, Overleaf, or similar tools. |
| EndNote | .enw | EndNote desktop — download the file then import it manually into your EndNote library. |
| CSV | .csv | Spreadsheet analysis — download the file and open it in Excel or Google Sheets. Rayyan data appears in the notes column. |
Best practice If unsure which format to use, choose RefMan (.ris) — it is the most universally compatible. Use CSV if you need to work with the data in a spreadsheet.
