AI credits measure how much of ResearchPilot™ your institution uses. Each AI action, such as analyzing an article with AI Analyzer or running Auto Extraction in Data Extraction, uses a set number of credits. Your institution gets a monthly pool of credits as part of its contract, and your institution's administrator decides how much of that pool each person can use. This article covers how credits work, what each feature costs, when credits reset, and what happens when they run out.
How AI credits work
Three numbers decide whether you can start an AI action:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Institution pool | The credits your institution has for the current month, set by its contract. |
| Capacity | The most one person can use from the pool this month. It's a limit, not credits set aside for that person. |
| Used | How many credits that person has used so far this month. |
You can start an AI action as long as you have capacity left and the institution pool still has credits. If your capacity is 0, AI features aren't available to you.
Credits are deducted only when an AI action completes successfully. An action that fails or times out doesn't use credits.
What each AI feature costs
| Feature | Charged for | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| AI Analyzer | Each article analyzed | 10 |
| AI Reviewer | Each article reviewed | 5 |
| Auto Extraction | Each full-text PDF, in Data Extraction | 100 |
| Review Articles Mode | Each question | 1 |
For example, running AI Analyzer on 10 articles uses 100 credits, and running Auto Extraction on 4 full-text PDFs also uses 400 credits. Credit costs are the same for everyone at your institution. Help Center Mode is free for all users and doesn't use credits.
When credits reset
Credits reset every month on your subscription's start date. For example, if your subscription started on September 22, credits reset on the 22nd of each month. At each reset, the institution pool is refilled and everyone's used credits go back to 0.
Plan your usage month by month. An annual contract with 100,000 credits a month gives you 100,000 credits each month, not 1.2 million credits at the start of the year. Unused credits don't carry over to the next month.
Check your credits
Your credits appear in the header at the top of Rayyan. You can see how much of your capacity you've used as a percentage, your capacity, and when your credits reset. The number updates while an AI action is running.
Manage credits for your institution
Institution administrators manage credits in the admin panel "https://rayyan.ai/admin", under Rayyan Credit. It has two tabs: Assigned credits and Usage.
Assigned credits shows your purchased pool, credits consumed, remaining credits, the reset date, and how much capacity is assigned and unassigned. From here you can:
- Set a default capacity. Enter one amount in the default capacity section, and every user on the default gets that capacity. Users you've given a custom capacity keep it.
- Give one person a different capacity. Search for the user and update their capacity. The status column shows Custom for users you've changed and Default for everyone else.
- Turn off AI access for someone. Set their capacity to 0.
Usage lets you pick a date range and see credit usage over that period, plus a table of how much each user used. Use it to see who uses AI the most and whether your institution is on track for the month.
When credits run out
If you reach your capacity, you can't start new AI actions, and Rayyan shows a message asking you to contact your institution administrator. Your administrator can raise your capacity if the pool still has unassigned capacity.
If the institution pool runs out, no one at your institution can start new AI actions until credits reset or your institution adds credits. Administrators can't raise anyone's capacity while the pool is empty.
Change your institution's credit pool
To change the size of your institution's pool, contact Rayyan Sales. The change applies right away:
- More credits: the extra credits are added to the pool, and you can use them this month. Credits already used and your reset date stay the same.
- Fewer credits: the smaller pool applies right away, and assigned capacities are reset to 0. Your administrator then assigns capacities again.
