Follow these steps to use the PICO functionality in Rayyan:
- Navigate to the Review Data page.
- Click on PICO from the top right corner of the page.
Pro Tip: There is an easy way to remember the highlighting colors used by Rayyan's advanced AI for each PICO element:
Purple = Population
Indigo = Intervention (& Comparison)
Orange = Outcome
4. Navigate to the Filters and scroll down to find Population, Intervention, and Outcome
5. Alternatively, instead of steps 1-3 above, you can activate PICO from the filters by clicking Enable
6. You may now use the filters to narrow in on the most relevant references using PICO
PICO Facets Showing Sample Data:
You'll notice that for each facet, Rayyan extracts the PICO element in truncated form to create an index of all references that contain that term. Each term can be selected to act as a filter and next to each term is the number of articles in which Rayyan has detected the use of that term within the context of the relevant PICO element. In other words, only terms detected in context to be related to Population will appear in the Population facet and the number of references containing that term will be depicted next to each term.
- Rayyan uses truncated forms of words and phrases. This captures multiple variations of words and optimizes accuracy.
- The Intervention facet includes both Intervention and Comparison elements (i.e. I and C are combined)
- Like other facets in Rayyan, you can select any number of words or phrases inside each facet. Selecting multiple items in the same facet functions as an OR function. In other words, your results will either stay the same or increase as you select more words or phrases
- Selecting words or phrases across facets works as an AND function. In other words, your results will either stay the same or decrease as you select additional words or phrases in other facets (i.e. your search results will be further constrained by adding more filters)
- You can click More at the bottom of each facet to see additional words or phrases. You can click and unclick filters, or use the Clear button in the visualization bar to clear all filters
- The facets are sorted by frequency of word or phrase so the most commonly founds terms are listed at the top
